Children debate and discuss various subjects including their key problems with Khelghar volunteers. The forum increases their awareness of the problem and helps them analyze the same objectively.

It was observed that the girls in the group feel awkward and do not participate in the activities. Being girls they have distinct experiences and problems to share. The special classes for girls help to give them trusted environment to talk on issues concerning them. Here they also get information that they need and become more confident and self-assured.

Learning science is a best tool in inculcating the habit of observation, asking questions, carrying out experiments, think and then arrive at conclusions. These sessions intend to inculcate a spirit of scientific curiosity through various activities, instead of teaching the text books in a routine way.

Many supplementary activities are planned alongwith the informal classes for children in Khelghar. Small excursions, exhibition visits and movie shows are arranged. Yearly events like annual social gathering and Dukan-Jatra are celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. Children rejoice through new ways of celebrating traditional festivals like Ganapati, Diwali, Sankranti and special Days like Woman’s Day, Earth Day, Children’s day. They participate with great zeal in planning, organizing and executing the event as well as post-event discussions.

Many of these children find it difficult to grasp the subject and clear their school exams. Therefore, supplementary study classes are conducted at Khelghar to clarify the basic concepts in different subjects – sufficient guidance regarding study skills and examination techniques is also provided. The subjects like Mathematics, English, Science and History-Geography are given priority. Special attention is provided to clarify the concepts, learn examination tools-techniques and practice.

We acknowledge that the success of Khelghar and AnandSankul is dependent on parent’s support. They need to acknowledge the importance of the activities, send their children regularly and trust our hands for children’s overall development. We have a weekly parents meeting to update them with the activity plans and take their suggestions. We also make home visits to discuss about their children’s learning process and various obstacles if any.

Economic constraints often come in way of continuance of education, especially for girls. The annual expenses for school fees, books, textbooks, uniform and such things approximately comes out to be Rs. 2000 per child. We try and extend help to needy children.
